What's Frosh Week?

Welcome to Engineering Science at SFU! Frosh Week is your chance to kick off your university journey by meeting your classmates, exploring campus, and becoming part of the engineering community before classes begin.

Throughout the week, you'll take part in events designed to help you make friends, discover campus resources, and experience engineering student life. Start with Monday's Freshman Kickoff, where you'll enjoy lunch while learning about the ESSS, student resources, and tips from upper-year students.

Test your knowledge at Tuesday's Engineering Trivia Night, bounce into new friendships at Extreme Air Park on Wednesday, and join Compass on Campus, hosted by Women in Engineering (WIE), on Thursday.

Then comes the BIGGEST, most unforgettable night of Frosh Week Midnight Madness!🎉 An exclusive 8 PM–8 AM overnight takeover of the Applied Sciences Building, run together with MSESS and SEESS from Surrey — 200+ students, prizes, games, and zero sleep. It's the undisputed highlight of the week.

Frosh Liftoff runs from Monday, September 14 to Friday, September 18, 2026.

Who's organizing this?

The SFU Engineering Science Student Society (ESSS) is a student-led organization supporting undergraduate Engineering Science students at Simon Fraser University. All ENSC students are automatically members — everyone is welcome to get involved!

We organize social events, academic supports, career-focused workshops, and community-building activities throughout the year. Frosh Week is one of our biggest events, run by ESSS executives and volunteers who want to help you start strong.

Frosh Liftoff is happening over 5 days (and one night) from Monday, September 14 to Friday, September 18, 2026.

There's something for everyone at Frosh, so we hope to see you at as many events as possible! If there are any changes in the schedule, we will notify everyone through email and announcements on Discord, so make sure you've signed up or joined the server.

Monday, September 14

⚙️ Freshman Kickoff

10:30 AM – 12:30 PM

Student Union Building (SUB) Ballroom, SFU Burnaby campus

Start your engineering journey with a catered lunch, meet your classmates, and learn everything you need to know about the Engineering Science program. We'll cover ESSS, specializations, student resources, opportunities, and ENSC course tips. Stick around for a Q&A and networking to get your questions answered and make your first engineering friends.

Tuesday, September 15

💭 Trivia Tuesday

4:30 PM – 6:30 PM

Big Data Presentation Studio (ASB 10900), SFU Burnaby campus

Put your engineering knowledge to the test! Team up with your classmates, compete for prizes, and meet more students in your program through team-based trivia and games in a fun, welcoming environment.

Wednesday, September 16

🤸 Extreme Air Park

6:30 PM – 7:30 PM

Extreme Air Park (109 Braid St, Building E, New Westminster, BC V3L 5H4)

Take a break from campus and bounce into new friendships at Extreme Air Park! The first 35 students to RSVP receive free admission. After the first 35 spots are filled, you're still welcome to attend, but you'll need to purchase your own ticket. If you're among the first 35 RSVPs, you'll receive a confirmation email closer to the event date.

Thursday, September 17

🧭 Compass on Campus (Hosted by Women in Engineering)

4:30 PM – 6:30 PM

ASB 9703, SFU Burnaby campus

Join Compass on Campus, hosted by Women in Engineering (WIE). Explore campus, learn about helpful resources, and connect with members of the engineering community.

Friday, September 18 – 19

🎉Midnight Madness🎉

8:00 PM – 8:00 AM

Applied Sciences Building, SFU Burnaby campus

Hosted by ESSS × MSESS × SEESS The BIGGEST Frosh Week event of the year, bringing together all three SFU engineering communities — Engineering Science from Burnaby, and Sustainable Energy Engineering and Mechatronic Systems Engineering from Surrey — for one huge overnight takeover.

200+ students, design challenges, a scavenger hunt, karaoke, and the Engineering vs. Computer Science Capture the Flag game, with chances to win Apple products, gaming gear, Raspberry Pis, and more. Free pizza, snacks, and drinks all night, plus a complimentary breakfast if you make it to morning.

Register for Frosh Week

Sign up for Frosh Week to stay in the loop on all events, receive schedule updates, and secure your spot at events with limited capacity.

Where will the events take place?

Most events take place at the SFU Burnaby campus. The Extreme Air Park event on Wednesday is off-campus in New Westminster. Locations for each event can be found in the schedule.

What should I bring to the events?

Monday, Tuesday & Thursday: just bring yourself!

Wednesday (Extreme Air Park): comfortable athletic clothing and a water bottle.

Friday (Midnight Madness):

Comfortable clothing — you'll get a Frosh shirt at check-in that must be worn all night. It's your event pass and helps us identify you as part of our group.

A water bottle, and anything you need to stay up all night.

Food and drinks are provided throughout, but feel free to bring your own snacks too.

If you're joining the physical activities, please bring/wear deodorant 🙏.

Optional but popular: a change of clothes/pajamas and a toothbrush.

How does free admission work for Extreme Air Park?

The first 35 students to RSVP receive free admission. After those spots are filled, you can still attend but you’ll need to purchase your own ticket. If you’re among the first 35, you’ll receive a confirmation email closer to the event date. If your plans change, please let us know so we can offer your spot to another student.

Do I need to fill out the waiver?

Yes — it's required if you're attending Midnight Madness, per policy for overnight events.

Waivers are checked upon arrival at check-in.

Hard copies are available at check-in if you weren't able to fill it out online beforehand.

What is Midnight Madness?

🎉 Midnight Madness is the BIGGEST Frosh Week event of the year — an 8:00 PM to 8:00 AM overnight takeover hosted by ESSS × MSESS × SEESS, bringing together 200+ students from all three SFU engineering programs.

Expect design challenges, a scavenger hunt, karaoke, and the Engineering vs. Computer Science Capture the Flag game, with free pizza, snacks, drinks, and breakfast all night, plus chances to win Apple products, gaming gear, and Raspberry Pis.

I can’t come to every event. Is that okay?

Yes. You can come and go as you please during Frosh Week. Late arrivals or early departures are totally OK. If you can’t attend some events due to other commitments, that’s fine too.

That said, it really helps if you register for the events you plan to attend — we order food based on RSVP numbers and have limited resources, so if you show up without an RSVP, we may not have food available for you.
